Chiffon vs. Organza: What’s the Difference?

Since both chiffon and organza are used frequently in weddings, most brides are very familiar with the two materials. To the untrained eye, chiffon and organza look quite similar—however, there are several distinct differences between the two.

Both chiffon and organza are soft and delicate fabrics, which makes them very popular in bridal attire. Chiffon is machine-woven from either silk or synthetic fibers like nylon. It is soft and sheer, and flows more easily. Its ethereal quality makes it perfect for gowns, sleeves, overskirts, and layered wraps. Organza, on the other hand, is a stiffer fabric. Also woven from silk or synthetic fibers, its luxurious and lightweight hand makes it perfect as a sheer fabric for top layers or inserts. It does not flow as well, but is best for layered gowns, veils, trains, and layered skirts. Unlike chiffon, organza is matte in appearance.

Both fabrics wear well, which makes them great for bridal wear. Chiffon, in particular, is the perfect option for summer brides who want to have an outdoor wedding. Although organza is often used as a feminine top layer for wedding dresses, it can also be used to provide structure to a bodice. Organza provides both appearance and function, whereas chiffon is primarily used merely for the appeal.

2012 Miss Teen Pasadena

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but one of our Nancy August team members got to participate as an official judge at the 2012 Miss Teen Pasadena competition. Taken place on March 18 in Anaheim, CA, the pageant included four divisions with young ladies between the ages of 7 and 19 competing for more than $30,000 in prizes and awards. Furthermore, the contestant to win the title of Miss Jr. Teen Pasadena will have the opportunity to represent Pasadena and surrounding communities at the Cities of America National Competition in Orlando, Florida. In a world where people put so much emphasis on beauty, I was happy to see that the judges also evaluated the contestants on their stage presence and personality. Best of all, I got to see all the colorful and beautiful dresses at the event—take a look at some of the pictures from the pageant now!

Dupioni vs. Shantung: What's the Difference?

If you’ve ever wondered, “what’s the difference between silk shantung and silk dupioni?”, you’ve come to the right place! Shantung and dupioni are the most heavily used fabrics in the market today—and especially to the untrained eye, it can be quite difficult to differentiate the two.

Though very similar, there are some slight differences between silk shantung fabric and silk dupioni fabric. To those who are curious about their differences, let me give you a quick breakdown!

Silk Dupioni


Silk Dupioni fabric has a very distinctive feature that gives it a gorgeous glimmering effect when moved around in light. The incredible sheen and vibrant colors are a result of its unique creation. Harvested from double cocoons or from single cocoons that are interlocked together, silk dupioni fabric is generally created through the use of two colors in the weave—this property is known as iridescence. Completely hand-woven, silk dupioni fabric also has much more prominent slubs and is the thickest of the two materials.

Silk Shantung


In contrast, silk shantung fabric does not produce the same iridescent effect because it only uses one color in the weave. Furthermore, this fabric has hardly any slubs, but those that do will have much smaller in thread width than a silk dupioni. Unlike its counterpart, silk shantung is machine-woven.

Princess Pageant Winner

Color vs. Color

Hello Everyone!

So a lot of our customers want to know the difference between our purple shades and blues. No fear, I am here to help! Lilac is a color that is a pale pantone of violet. It is also described as light purple. Lavender is a light tone of violet. Shades of lavender can range in hues from pinkish purple through violet to bluish-indigo. They can also range from light and pale to medium grayish shades. To make it easier:

· Lilac is a warmer purple color, closer to the reds/pinks.

· Lavender is a cooler purple color, closer to the blues.

Now moving on to our blue-greenish shades…..

• Tiffany Blue is a specific shade of light blue, similar to a robin’s blue egg color, associated with the jewelry company, Tiffany & Co.
• Teal is a low-saturated color, similar to medium blue-green and dark cyan.
• Turquoise is a bluish tone of light green. The color is based on the gem turquoise color.

It is almost that time of year again! As the seasons turn, we look forward to new styles and colors for the spring. This spring you will notice so many wonderful trends! Here are a few trends to keep in mind for 2012’s spring:

• · Bold Prints- Bright geometric graphics, floral prints, circles and vivid prints are a sure hit this spring. Keep an eye out for these! Do not shy away from these bold prints and patterns; they are the way to go this year!
• · Garden Power- What is spring without flowers? Flower prints will be everywhere for this spring. Every flower in the garden will be seen girl’s clothing.
• · Pastels – Soft and feminine colors are back. Powder pinks, blue and greens are taking center stage.
• · Embellishments – Eye catching embellishment are prevailing this year. From adorable little trinkets, ribbons, lace trims, embroidery and ruche fabrics, they are this year’s must have!
• · Ruffles- This current trend is not going away! It is still around for this spring. New ruffles are standing out due to the delicacy of line and the unique, chic look. Ruffles are a guaranteed eye catcher as they are meant to attract attention.

Here are a Spring’s 2012 featured colors. Every season, color forecaster Pantone determines fashion’s next IT-colors. For spring 2012, the palette features hues that are bright and sunny that mix well with neutrals.

1. Tangerine Tango

This particularly vibrant shade is almost universally flattering on skin tones. Look for it to be paired with black and white.

2. Solar Power

There are few things bright than the sun and this golden yellow channels its warmest undertones. If you don’t want to look too sunny, try a handbag or shoes in this high-wattage color.

3. Sodalite blue

For those who love navy in the springtime, the blue tones in this color really matches the rich royal blue undertones of its mineral namesake.

4. Cabaret

This pink is literally hot. This will be the bold eye-catcher for the pinks.

5. Starfish

This deep khaki radiates warmth and will be paired with extremely bright colors.

6. Margarita

This spring’s pastel green is toned down version of a margarita is a subdued yellowish green with almost grayish undertones.

7. Sweet Lilac

Lilacs look and smell like spring. Richer than a typical pastel, this lavender shade will put you in the mood for warm weather.

8. Driftwood

This color isn’t one of the brightest of the bunch, but will be an amazing balance to the other vibrant spring colors.

9. Bellflower

This vibrant purple will compliment many skin tones and is a fresh springy take on purple.
